Tech FAQ

All WPCS schools have wireless networks accessible to students and staff. School-owned devices will automatically connect to these networks. Personal devices will need to be connected manually. To do this, access the “WPCSwireless” network. Use your network credentials when prompted. After connecting, you will need to login to the network filter. To do this, go to example.com or captive.apple.com. Once the login screen appears, use your network credentials again. You are now connected to the network.

If the issue is software based, ask your teacher for help. If they are unable to assist, please come to the tech room for your school. For WPHS, this is 511, WPMS is 216.

If you have damaged your device, ask your teacher to come to the tech room. If the issue can be fixed, we will issue a loaner until your device is ready to be picked up.

Yes, but with some limitations. You are allowed to personalize your laptop with anything that can be easily removed. We do not recommend using stickers on your device unless you are 100% sure they can be easily removed. You must also not cover the WPCS sticker on the top of your device. This is used when you bring your device for service, and when your device is checked in at the end of the year. As such, it must not be obscured.

When graduating from WPCS, if you do not take your device with you, it must be in its original state, otherwise you may be required to pay a cleaning fee.

You have many options in storing files, some better than others. In order of best to worst:

  1. Google Drive. We recommend this option heavily, as your data is safely stored in the cloud, and can be accessed anywhere. We generally do not enforce any restrictions on what can be stored on Google Drive, as long as it is legal and not inappropriate for school. Google provides WPCS with a large amount of storage, which makes this a solid option for storing all your data.
  2. External Storage Device. This can be a thumb drive or external hard drive. This option is good for files that need to be moved between PCs, or for backups, but we don’t recommend using this as your sole storage method, as it can be easily lost or damaged.
  3. Laptop hard drive. We do not recommend storing files on your laptop hard drive unless you do not need to keep them. Files stored on your laptop are ONLY ACCESSIBLE FROM YOUR LAPTOP. They cannot be accessed by any other device regardless of location. In addition, laptops are wiped after being collected every year. As such, data loss can easily occur. You should consider one of the other options.

On the last day of classes, we will call down students by grade to turn in their laptops. Bring your laptop & student ID. You will enter the library, where helpers will place a new sticker on the top of your laptop that corresponds to your new grade level. Afterwards, you will receive a damage check sheet to bring to the techs in the library. They will do a quick inspection of your device, note any damages, and sign off on it. You will walk across the hall to the FIC room, where your device will be checked in, and damage sheet taken. You will keep your power cord with you unless you are graduating and not keeping the device.

If you are keeping your device, you must still turn it in so that we can remove all district software from the device. Your device will be returned to you with a copy of Windows and basic programs. The device will be removed from WPCS management, and you will be free to make any changes you’d like.

Laptops are returned on the first day of school. We will call students down by grade. Bring your device paperwork, and give it to the helpers at the front of the line. They will provide you with a sheet to hand to the techs in the FIC room. They will check your laptop out to you.
