1-1 Policies

Standards of Responsible Use of Technology

West Point Community Schools (WPCS) believes that behavioral standards that are expected in any school activity are the same as those expected while using WPCS technology. Use of technology should be respectful and ethical, and consistent with the WPCS mission. Tech should be used by students to learn and communicate with the objective of improving instruction and student learning.

Care of Equipment

Students are expected to exercise reasonable care and caution in handling their device & associated peripherals. The devices should be returned in good condition at the end of every school year. Reasonable and normal wear and tear of devices over the course of their useful life is understood and accepted by WPCS.

Procedures

  • Students should take possession of their device during registration days or during the first 5 days of school, whichever is in use for the school year. The device should be returned to WPCS no later than the last day of each school year, or upon withdrawal from the district unless otherwise directed.
  • Should a device be stolen, vandalized, or subject to other criminal acts, a police report MUST be filed within 48 hours of the occurrence. A copy of the report must be brought to the school for verification.
  • If a student continuously displays careless behavior with their device, or damages it on a regular basis, the district will repossess the device.
  • Students are expected to bring their device charged to school every day.

Damage

  • Students and parents will be held liable for any and all damages that are a result of neglect.

Transporting Devices

  • Devices should be carried in a backpack or other safe carrier during the school day and during transportation to and from school.

Software Policies

  • WPCS will install all required software on school devices. The software loaded on school devices must be approved by WPCS. Any violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action and potentially repossession of the device, depending on the severity.
  • Music & games are not allowed to be downloaded or streamed over the internet if they violate copyright laws.

Device Files

  • Students should not delete any files or folders that they did not create or do not recognize. Doing so may cause failure of the computer’s operating system, and will require the student’s laptop to be reimaged.

Home Use

  • Devices should only be used by the student at home. Other family members – including other students – are not allowed to use the school-owned device.
  • If a device has issues, it may be reimaged. Information saved to the device is lost during this process. Students are recommended to save files to the school server, or other sources such as Google Drive.
  • Students are allowed to save personal files to the laptop, but they should be backed up to an external hard drive, or other service such as Google Drive.
  • Internet access on school-owned devices is filtered as it is at school.
  • Issues with connecting to home networks, printers or other devices are not supported by the Technology Department.

Liability

  • WPCS is not responsible for home service interruption, spread of viruses to other personal computers or loss of personal data.
