Welcome back students & staff! We’re happy to have you back for the school year. All students, parents & staff should have received a copy of our 2021-2022 reopening presentation. The important information is relayed here.
As always, this plan was created with consideration of department of education guidelines, local health guidelines, and in coordination with other neighboring schools. They are subject to change as guidelines and situations change.
In Person Learning
In person learning will resume full time for the 2021-2022 school year. Some mitigation strategies will remain and we will continue to monitor data about COVID-19 spread in the local community.
- Students will attend school in person 5 days a week.
- Masks or other face coverings will not be required inside WPCS buildings
- Exception: School buses will require a mask due to federal regulations.
- Exception: Students who are considered a close contact. See below for info.
- Other cleaning & mitigation strategies will continue. Specific strategies will be modified depending on local guidance.
Positive Test Results
Students & staff with a positive COVID-19 test result will isolate for 10 days, and complete work from home.
Close Contacts
Students or staff who are determined to be a close contact with another student or staff member that has tested positive for COVID-19 will be required to wear a mask at school or quarantine at home. A close contact is anyone within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes (cumulative) in a day.
Individuals which qualify as close contacts can remain at school, given they follow these conditions:
- Must provide their own transportation.
- Must isolate if symptoms of COVID-19 develop
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing with soap & water for 20 seconds or using at least 60% alcohol hand sanitizer
- Stay at least 3 feet from other individuals
- Wear a mask over the nose & mouth at all times when around others
- Eat meals appropriately distanced from others
- Maintain 6 feet & remain masked during extra-curricular activities.
Close contacts that have been vaccinated will not be required to quarantine or follow these conditions, including those that participate in extra-curricular activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will my child be required to wear a mask?
A. No, West Point Community Schools is not requiring students to wear masks, except those that are close contacts, per the guidelines above.
Q. Will my child be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19?
A. West Point Community Schools will not require students to be vaccinated, nor are we suggesting either way. WPCS believes in personal health choices and suggests families consult with their doctor to determine whether their child should be vaccinated. However, if state guidance requires such a mandate, we will be required to follow said guidance (though we will be sure to relay the feedback from our district’s families to the state in such a scenario).
Q. If my child is considered a close contact, but I don’t want them to wear a mask, is there an alternate option?
A. Your child can quarantine for 14 days and complete school work at home.
Q. Can my child continue to do virtual learning?
A. We are not continuing the virtual learning option this year. We require students to attend in person, or enroll in self-paced courses through Digital Academy/Blended Learning.
Additional resources about various COVID-19 topics can be found on the state department of health website. If parents have any other questions or concerns about our 2021-2022 reopening plan, we encourage them to contact their child’s school, or the school board at board@westpointschools.org.
Otherwise, welcome back again to our students & staff! We’re happy to see you again.
