Network AUA

We are pleased to provide computer network/internet access to the West Point Community Schools and believe that it will provide unique resources to students & staff. Our goal is to promote education excellence via resource sharing, communication and innovation.

As a result of this access, there also is the availability of material that is not suitable for school purposes. WPCS and its employees have taken precautions to avoid access to such materials. Since it is technically impossible to control all access to internet sites, there is a need for students to exercise good internet browsing practices and avoid such material.

The purpose of this agreement is to ensure all that access the computer network use it appropriately.

Requirements

At school, users shall not:

  • Use the network to perform any unethical, illegal or immoral activity, including unauthorized access to other systems.
  • Deliberately cause damage to equipment or software, or help others do so.
  • Cause or attempt to harm, modify or destroy user data, information or materials.
  • Exchange passwords or access codes.
  • Intentionally upload or download malicious software.
  • Harass other users. This includes but is not limited to sending unwanted emails, participating in conversation or chats where the theme includes sexual, racial or ethnic slurs.
  • Under no circumstances should users send personal information over email or other media. Email is not a private file.
  • Deliberately access inappropriate materials or show others how to do so. If any user finds or learns that another user is accessing such material, the user shall not download or otherwise transfer the material, and shall not share the location with anyone other than an appropriate adult in charge of the situation.
  • Buy or sell products/services over the district network.

Responsible users shall:

  • Respect privacy rights of other users files
  • Respect copyright laws
  • Follow the direction of the adult in charge and follow established procedure to access the network
  • Seek advice from an adult if questions arise
  • Be polite and use no abusive/offensive language

The user assumes full responsibility for the consequences of their own actions while connecting to the computer network. All students of adequate age must sign the agreement in order to access the network. There are no exceptions. To ensure compliance with the guidelines, the district reserves the right to examine and access the contents of school owned devices, files and accounts on the school servers, as well as any data that traverses the network.

Consequences

Users of the network should be aware that their actions reflect upon the reputation of the school.

  • All users have the responsibility of complying to the standards of conduct.
  • All instances of abuse will be reviewed by the building principal, or someone designated by them.
  • Any abuse of the network will result in suspension of access. Referral to law enforcement may occur if necessary.
  • Other actions may include but are not limited to, removal from certain activities, removal from class, after school detention, in/out of school suspension or even expulsion.

WPCS prohibits illegal distribution, copying, pirating or possession of software in violation of copyright law. Anyone transferring such files, or whose accounts are found to contain such files, may lose network privileges. Such offenders may be turned over to appropriate law enforcement agencies if needed. Violation of copyright law can result in fines or even jail sentence.
